Chapter 14
Silas
After Madison left Suds the night before, Silas had managed to drink enough beer to earn himself a terrible headache.
Though it was cliché, he scarfed down a donut and popped something for his headache for breakfast on his way to the office. He had to go out and push some of the neighbors who had to know where Jay Pell, his carjacker, was and when heâd be around the neighborhood. Until then, he had everyone keeping an eye out.
With him striking so often, he had to be ditching the cars someplace local, but so far, none of the local businesses were cooperating with police.
He pulled up at the departmentâs parking lot just before Madison, who he met as she was just getting out of her car. âHey,â he said, feeling like a jerk.
âHey, yourself. You look a little rough today,â she said as if everything was normal.
âListen, Iâm really sorry about last night. I know you have enough to deal with Mulhern on you all the time. I shouldnât have hit on you.â
âYou donât have to apologize. I wasnât offended. If anything, I was taken off guard, but thatâs more my issue than yours.â
âNo, I take responsibility. It was out of line.â He didnât like her thinking bad of him, and if they were going to be friends and have open conversations about work, they needed to trust one another. And that went both ways.
She brushed it off with a chuckle and headed toward the building. âAre you coming? Or are you going to stand out here feeling bad all day?â
He quickly stepped up beside her. âI may have been a little loose-lipped last night as well.â
âLook, donât worry, okay? What happened at Suds stays at Suds.â She reached for the door, and he quickly got it and held it open.
As soon as the door was open, he could hear Fletcherâs voice yelling out across the room, and everyone in the department was standing quietly as he ranted, throwing his arms up in the air.
âWhat did I say about everyone keeping their mouth shut? Now, because someone decided to talk to the press, Iâm busy doing damage control, and I donât like it!â
Silas hoped he and Madison could slip in unnoticed, but as soon as he stepped foot in Fletcherâs sight, he was his target.
âOh, there you are, Warren. I was looking for you. I thought you might get here early today and show some enthusiasm now that you have an ID on your suspect.â
Silas hated being singled out, and as he looked around the room, he could see that all eyes were on the two of them. âIâm on it, Captain.â Usually, that was enough to appease the old man but not today.
âYeah, Iâm sure you are. How long have you been on this case? What is it, two months? Letâs hope it doesnât take you another one to bring this man in.â
âSome cases take time. I thought Iâd take my time with this one and get the right man.
